| The Monmouthshire
& Brecon Canal starts in the historic market town of
Brecon, where the water for the canal is
drawn from the River Usk. Brecon boasts a fine
Cathedral, two fascinating museums and two market
days a week on Tuesday and Friday. There is also the
new theatre at the head of the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal with
it’s modern canalside bistro.
Govilon has the oldest English speaking Baptist
Chapel in Wales with it’s unusual outside font,
filled at one time with water from the Mon & Brec
for Baptisms!
There are lots of interesting villages to explore
like Llangattock where the Church contains the
village stocks and whipping post.
Crickhowell is a short walk from the Mon & Brec
canal, across the River Usk and is well worth a
visit on your canal holiday. It has a castle, lots
of interesting little shops and some great pubs, and
award winning sausages from a local butcher.
Abergavenny is located across the Usk Valley from
the Mon & Brec and is accessible by foot, bus or
taxi. It is a charming town with castle, museum and
a good shopping centre with market day on Tuesday.
Not far from the Mon & Brec canal is the Llangorse
Riding and Rope Centre which is an ideal visit for
the whole family. Riding can be enjoyed on miles of
private tracks and the indoor climbing centre offers
indoor abseiling, climbing and pot holing. |
ITINERARY FOR
3/4 NIGHT SHORT BREAKS, 7 NIGHTS AND LONGER CANAL
HOLIDAYS.
We offer canal holidays of
3 nights starting on Friday or Saturday, 4 nights
starting Monday or Tuesday, or seven nights starting
Friday, Saturday, Monday or Tuesday. The boats page
shows you which canal holiday boats are available
for the various start-days and periods of hire.
A 7 night canal holiday cruise allows time to enjoy
the whole Monmouthshire & Brecon canal but you will
need to plan to cruise for about six hours every
day, so why not take a 10 night break and enjoy the
whole Mon & Brec canal at a more leisurely pace and
still have time to explore the towns and villages.
Many people taking a weeks canal holiday prefer to
take advantage of the excellent footpaths above the
Mon & Brec that allow you to enjoy amazing views of
the beautiful surroundings from higher up the hills.
There are also many places where you can investigate
the industrial heritage of the area from the days of
coal mines, lime kilns and iron-making. This will
still leave plenty of time to enjoy cruising on this
wonderful canal and to experience the locks,
lift-bridges, tunnel and aqueduct, and visit
Abergavenny or Brecon on market days.
During a 3 or 4 night short-break canal holiday on
the Mon & Brec you will have the opportunity to
experience the most interesting stretch of the
canal, where you will encounter the lift-bridges,
tunnel and all the locks. You should also have time
to traverse Brynich Aqueduct where the canal passes
forty feet above the River Usk on it’s way to
Brecon. |
